Description:

On October 10, 2018, Hurricane Michael slammed into the panhandle of Florida. The storm claimed 72 lives and caused damage totaling more than $25 billion in Florida, Alabama, and Georgia. In response, more than 450 off-duty police officers were deployed to assist in recovery and restoration efforts. The officers performed traffic control functions and restricted access to areas where sensitive materials and equipment were stored. This scenario is not unusual. Because of increased regulatory and legal challenges faced by security companies, the use of off-duty law enforcement in response to natural disasters, workplace violence, and executive protection is increasing. Explore the benefits and the potential legal hurdles companies can experience when using off-duty police for contracted services.
